What to expect

Begin with the history of Bath — founded as a health spa by the Romans, who built their bath complexes here over two hundred years to take advantage of the natural hot springs. The Roman Baths are 2,000 years old and among the finest antiquities in Britain.

Bath also boasts some of the best Georgian architecture in the country. The great Pump Room and Assembly Rooms still stand as they did in Jane Austen's day, and the majestic sweep of the Royal Crescent has looked out over the city for three hundred years. When the sun reflects on Bath's honey-coloured limestone, few cities can rival its beauty.

Then visit Stonehenge — the massive circle of standing stones in the green fields of Wiltshire. A spiritual place and a source of inspiration, its purpose still debated: astronomical observatory or site of sacred sun rituals? Walk in the footsteps of your Neolithic ancestors and decide for yourself.

Time permitting, ask your driver to stop for a photo opportunity at Highclere Castle, the main filming location of Downton Abbey.
